Sorry to hear about all the stress in your life. Well I first want to say congrats on the pregnancy and that you are taking steps to improve yourself and the baby. Great job.

First of all. you need to eat as soon as you wake up - it jump starts your metabolism. Here are some ideas:
peanut butter sandwich (on whole wheat bread), yogurt, cereal (cheerios), hard cooked eggs (or any egg fully cooked through). these are just a few ideas.

On my website I have a ton of healthy snack ideas. you should check it out. great info on nutrition and will help you get started on understanding what to eat and not eat. www.StaceyRD.com

I am a registered dietitian so I would love to help you. go to my site and e-mail me. I would be happy to help you get on the right foot.

It is also important to not diet when you are pregnant. the baby needs the nutrients. If you are not taking a prenatal vitamin, you should start taking one.

You said that you like smoothies. that is a great way to get you fruit serving in for the day. All you need is a blender. I like to take a bag of the mixed fruit (frozen), thaw it in the microwave a little. then add maybe 3/4 cup of vanilla yogurt. then blend it up. you have yourself a healthy smoothie. You could also use orange juice instead of yogurt.

You said that your mom will get groceries for you. here is a great start list:
-Fresh fruit (that you do like)
-Fresh vegetables (you will eat)
-Frozen Fruit
-Frozen Vegetables
-whole wheat bread
-peanut butter
-eggs
-yogurt
-Skim milk
-chicken breasts
-pork tenderloin
-string cheese
-whole wheat crackers
-this is just some ideas - there are a ton more choices

*Tip - shop the perimeter of the store to find healthy choices (produce, meats, dairy)

*It may help to take some cooking lessons too. that will help you to stay home and eat versus going out to eat. You know you can actually safe a lot of money by cooking at home vs. going out to eat.
-A very easy dinner to make is throw a pork tenderloin in a crock pot with some carrots, potatoes and a little onion and let it cook all day on low. So your supper cooks while you are gone all day.

The other poster, the dietician, has given you some excellent advice. Your obstetrician or his staff should be able to give you some printed material about what you should be eating - and don’t forget your prenatal vitamins. (If they make you nauseated, try taking them in the evening with some food.)

I just want to add: why not go out for a walk every day. The exercise will not only help you lose a little weight (or help prevent more unwanted weight from creeping on) but will also help reduce your depression and stress. It’s not entirely about what you eat and don’t eat but about your overall health. There is no reason you can’t get out and get some fresh air and move - good for you and the baby.

All the best.
