I’ve been experiencing anxiety and other symptoms since my surgery – will this resolve itself. Is it common.
Saturday, September 3rd, 2011Hi everyone,
I’m 21 years old and recently had some surgery.
I had laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis under a general anesthetic, and my gynecologist found quite a lot of endometriosis. It was wide spread, but mild. I had the surgery done a week ago. My symptoms before the surgery were mostly pelvic pain.
In 2009, I had some issues with anxiety/panic attacks, but since then have been okay and have been on amitriptyline.
After this surgery, they have returned to a lesser extent, and I’ve also been feeling quite depressed and irritable. I feel like crying all the time, and am quite emotionally unstable. I don’t know what to do.
I’ve also been having unsettled sleep, and disturbing nightmares. My appetite isn’t quite what it was either – I’m just not as hungry. I’m tired all the time too.
I should add that they thought my anesthetic scraped my throat with the tubing during the surgery, as I had a sore throat, cough and congestion. The GP was concerned about it causing a chest/throat infection, so has put me on antibiotics. I had symptoms of anxiety etc BEFORE I was put on the antibiotic, and most of my chest/throat symptoms have cleared up.
I’ve had many surgeries under general anesthetic in the past. These include: Arnold Chiari Malformation Decompression (brain surgery), wisdom teeth removal and an appendectomy. I’ve also had some procedures under a general anesthetic, including a colonoscopy and gastroscopy.
I didn’t experience too much nausea following this laparoscopic surgery, or even too much pain. I was on Endone for about a day, and Panadol for a few days.
The anxiety seems to have really set in for the past 24 hours or so. It’s really bothering me, and I want to get back to living my life.
Is this anxiety likely to clear up on its own.
Is it anxiety and these other symptoms common after a surgery and/or general anesthetic.
Has anyone else experienced this.
Thank you.
